What are online doctoral programs?

PhD degrees are the highest academic degree you can obtain. They are normally earned after five or more years of graduate studies, which include research. To obtain an online doctoral program, it requires that you have an in-depth knowledge of a specialized field, and your original research can be used for publication. PhD holders are qualified to teach at the university level or hold upper level positions in universities or industries, as PhD graduates provides both universities and companies with access to a highly skilled workforce and cutting-edge academic research. In the U.S., less than 1% of the workforce holds a PhD.

Choosing online doctoral programs?

In today’s economic situation, masters and PhD graduates are in high demand. More and more, companies are looking for highly specialized workers, which can often be only achieved through extensive education. Doing online doctoral programs will allow you to create much more career opportunities. Online doctoral programs allow you to use your knowledge and your work experience to conduct research in a field that greatly interests you.

Ideally, students would have to do their PhD in an environment where they can regularly meet with their supervisors or their committee. In most situations, universities highly recommend people who are contemplating the idea of doing a PhD to choose a university that is accessible to them or an environment close to the people who will be supervising their research.

However, due to geographic restrictions, it can be impossible for some people to do the research of their choice. Maybe you live in a location far from any university. Or the only program you are interested in is not offered in the university nearby. And moving is not an option for everybody. It is costly, or you may already have a family, which make moving even more difficult.

This is why there are online doctoral programs. Online doctoral programs offer PhD students the option of conducting their research from home. However, not all universities offer online doctoral programs, and some universities may offer online doctoral programs under certain conditions. For example, they can require the PhD student to meet up with their committee at least once a year or to try to meet with their supervisor several times a year. When doing online doctoral programs, the PhD fellow will keep in close contact with their supervisor by emails and phone.
